Venetian Arts Society: Cultural Arts Enrichment Series

An introduction/interview/discussion/Q&A exploring the life and career of legendary African-American Opera Star and Civil Rights Activist GRACE BUMBRY in a relaxed, yet focused, “conversational setting with students, artists, and audience participants and create a nurturing and all-encompassing learning experience with this legendary artist/humanitarian. This is a rare and extraordinary opportunity for an UP CLOSE & PERSONAL encounter with a truly historic “game changer” and legendary artist both in person and through rare video clips, photos and newspaper articles.

Grace Bumbry played a major role in the pioneering generation of Black opera singers who are credited with following legendary civil rights pioneer and singer Marian Anderson, in paving the way for African American women in opera. We will explore Grace Bumbry and The Great Migration, sometimes known as the Great Northward Migration, or the Black Migration, was the movement of six million African-Americans out of the rural Southern United States to the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West that occurred between 1916 and 1970. Ms. Bumbry was appointed a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador to teach “tolerance” and the necessity of education and health care for disadvantaged youth and continues to inspire and motivate up and coming generations through her personal message for youth in today’s society, overcoming adversity now as compared to 1950’s & 1960”s.

“Genius is not enough…it takes courage to change people’s hearts.” -Quote from Green Book (2018 movie)
